If you are not already aware George DeRoe passed away peacefully in his sleep on 19th April 2011 aged 93. He was found in his self-built home next to Dolgoch Hostel. He loved living there and it would have been his wish to breath his last there, rather than in a hospital or old people’s home.
Most of you will of course know that he was the original and only resident YHA warden, moving in before the hostel first opened some four decades ago. After the YHA replaced him with volunteer wardens, he built his humble abode next to the hostel, where he remained until his death.
His funeral will be held at Aberwystwyth Cremetorium on Wednesday 11th May 2011 at Midday. This is located on the B4572 off the A487.
Many of you may have fond memories of George and may wish to remember him even if you are unable to attend the service. It has been suggested that a permanent and practical memorial should be put in place at Dolgoch, and to that end it is proposed to install a quality wooden bench at the hostel with a suitable plaque to remember him by.
If you wish to make a donation towards this bench in lieu of flowers then please send your contribution to the Elenydd Wilderness Hostels Trust’s treasurer, David Bicker, 7 Hartlebury Road, Halesowen, West Midlands B63 4PL. Cheques should be made payable to Elenydd Wilderness Hostels. Please write on the back of the cheque ‘George’s bench’ or send a short note to that effect.
There will also be a memorial service for George held at Dolgoch on Sunday 19th June at 11.00am.
The above was e-mail from Mark Willcock the Membership Secretary of the Elenydd Wilderness Hostels, I know alot visitors to this site and RSF members over years have stay at Dolgoch Youth Hostel. May wish to share there memories of George and write a few lines about him in the comments below.

The grant application for £82,000 to improve the structure and amenities at Dologoch has been successful!
This is European money which has been allocated to the Ceredigion Rural Development Plan via the Welsh Assembly.
Improvements will take place over the next 3 years and will include structural repairs, some changes to the interior of the building and the addition of disabled accommodation. Everything will be done sympathetically to maintain the unique character of the place. And of course major repairs to the access track are high on the list of priorities.
As far as possible Dolgoch will remain open during this period and any periods of closure will kept to an absolute minimun.

We are hoping to hold a sponsored walk, to take place Saturday 19th May 2007, with a BBQ to follow on the Saturday afternoon and evening. The hopes are that such an event will give members of the Trust, both young and old, a chance to meet each other and the committee members and strengthen ties at this early stage in the Trusts life. Sponsorship money will go towards the operating costs of Tyncornel and to help fund any future purchase of Dolgoch.
The plan is to hold two simultaneous walks: one short walk at approximately 5-6 miles and one longer walk at approximately 14-15 miles. Both walks will begin on Saturday morning at Dolgoch Youth Hostel. Each of the walks will finish at Tyncornel, where a BBQ will be ongoing from mid-afternoon. On the Friday and Saturday nights we hope to put up as many people as possible at the two hostels, with the possibility of camping at Tyncornel. If the numbers exceed the capacity of the two hostels, then we shall pass on details of B&B’s in the area (Places at the hostels will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis). Our main concern is that people of all ages take part, particularly young people, whose interest the Trust has served in saving Tyncornel for the future. If you have children or grandchildren who could manage the distance of 5-6 miles from Dolgoch-Tyncornel then please bring them along: the streams and mountains of the Elenydd can be an exciting place for children!
If you are interested in taking part, please complete the application form ( you e-mail me or Jeffrey Matthews for an application form Simeon) electronically and send it to Jeffrey Matthews:
Email: firstname.lastname@example.org *
Once we have an idea of the numbers involved we shall email with an itinerary, sponsor form and details of the prices for overnights and the BBQ (we will try to keep this to a minimum).
