TONIGHT Wednesday 18 April 8.00pm &
Tuesday 24 April 6.30pm FREE
Wheel to Reel Shorts
Cinemas, Cycle Demonstration Towns and Bike Film Festivals across the country have teamed up to run a national bike film making competition.  On these evenings we will be showing the winning films - both documentary and action shorts - from this pioneering competition.

Shorts include: Glasgow Critical Mass; Bike Thief; Cappuccetto Rosso (Little Red Riding Hood); La Fuga Di Olma (Olmo’s Escape) and Cycle Speedway

Sunday 22 April 6.00pm
Top Riders
Top Riders is a human story about ordinary people doing extra ordinary things. The film follows 19 cyclists as they ride 1100km from Cairns to Cape York, through some of the toughest terrain in Australia, raising money for the Fred Hollows Foundation.  Escaping the rush of city life, they tackle the Australian outback to learn to overcome the perils of the harsh environment and the challenges of off roach cycling as they move each day towards their final goal.
There will be a collection for The Fred Hollows Foundation  www.hollows.org - on this evening.

Tuesday 24 April 8.30pm &
Wednesday 25 April 6.00pm
Overcoming
This profound documentary follows former pro rider and Tour de France winner Bjarne Riis and his new Team CSC as they strive to become the world’s best and win the Tour de France.  A unique insight into the team’s bid for victory, Ivan Basso takes on Lance Armstrong for the yellow shirt, whilst Riis must carry the physical and emotional weight of the whole team on his shoulders.  We see the challenges, setbacks and injuries common to every sporting competition but which are magnified by the Tour’s intensity and gruelling pace. The crashes are horrific and the athletes’ determination to compete in spite of broken limbs and torn flesh formidable.

Thursday 26 April 7.30pm FREE
The Carbon Cycle
Supported by a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellowship, in 2006 Dr Kate Rawles cycled 4553 miles from El Paso to Anchorage along the spine of the Rockies, exploring American attitudes to climate change.  Tonight Kate will share all that she learned about climate change beliefs in the USA - starting with “heck honey I sure think it’s just mother nature”  and what we in Europe can learn from the most oil intensive culture on earth about the urgent changes necessary if we are to respond to the climate change challenge.
Book early to guarantee yourself a place for this one - it’s likely to be busy!

Tickets for the auditorium events cost £4.50 (conc £3.50). Places in the gallery for the free films and events are strictly limited so booking is strongly recommended. CITY CENTRE STRATEGY

In 2006 Mayer Brown was commissioned by Lancaster City Council to provide a cycle strategy for Lancaster city centre.    The project team have now carried out a range of site visits for data collection and completed further desk study work in order to make best use of existing information. The development of the strategy has been supplemented by liaison with Local Authority officers and cycle groups.
The aim of the study is to provide an evidence based cycle strategy to enable appropriate investment in cycle facilities and encourage cycle use to, and through the city centre. This will support the Cycle Demonstration Towns project up to 2008, and
provide a strategy for future investment beyond this date.
The strategy must provide a fast, safe and comfortable cycle network, whilst not impacting on the traffic capacity within Lancaster city centre’s main one way (gyratory) system. In addition, the implementation of the cycle strategy should not adversely affect the operation of other modes of transport within the city centre. The strategy also aims to inform on supporting measures such as cycle parking, route signage, traffic management, 20mph zones and rail station development.

How do you fancy raising money for the region’s only air ambulance?
We are staging the second annual North West Air Ambulance Cycle Challenge on Sunday 13th May and we’d love you to take part and raise funds to keep this vital life-saving service flying.

The challenge consists of a 43 mile route around Cheshire, starting and finishing at Tatton Park, Knutsford.  Taking in some of the most picturesque locations in the county, the challenge promises to be a rewarding ride, made even better because you will be raising money for such a worthy cause.

Every year, the air ambulance saves hundreds of lives and is often called to those who find themselves in difficulty while in remote locations. The North West Air Ambulance has often come to the rescue of cyclists, so here is your chance to give something back to a service that relies solely on voluntary donations.

To enter the Challenge, it’s just £10 for adults and £5 for children, but there is also an opportunity for participants to raise more money through sponsorship.

(You’ve also got the option of a 5 mile family fun ride around Tatton Park on the same day in case you don’t feel up to the full 43 mile challenge!)

Receiving no mainstream funding, the North West Air Ambulance is dependent on the generosity of businesses and the people of the region to fund the £1.9 million a year to keep it airborne, so please help support this worthwhile cause on Sunday 13th May.

Please call the NWAA fundraising team on 0800 587 4570 (Monday - Friday, 9am until 5pm) or log on to www.northwestairambulance.co.uk for further information or to log your interest.

Happy Easter Everyone from the Celebrating Cycling Team

CTC Lancaster & Cumbria D.A.

Below is full version of 1,000 and counting by Mike Hutchinson. Edited version of this article is in the April/May issue of Cycle.

The Lune & Lakes DA [renamed Lancaster & Cumbria DA in Jan.2003] was formed in 1984 having separated from the old North West D.A. which covered the whole of the geographical area stretching from Southport to the Scottish Borders – 117 miles in length. Initially the Lune & Lakes DA and the Lancaster Section were virtually synonymous. The committee at that time embarked upon a drive to encourage the formation of new sections to the north of the Lancaster area and in the year ending September 1997 the Eden (Cumbria) Section was created to serve an area in the north of the region.

In effect the DA still covers a very large geographical area and the two sections, now well established, operate separately but in tandem with each other. For example we alternate the venues of the DA annual general meetings between the two sections: in November 2006 the AGM was held in Lancaster; in October 2007 it will be held in Dufton. There are over 1,000 CTC members within the DA. As a consequence of obvious geographical distinctions it has agreed to divide responsibility at the local level on a postcode basis: CA for the Eden (Cumbria) Section; LA for Lancaster (and South Cumbria). However, only a relatively small proportion of the CTC membership is involved in the specific activities of these two sections. The area has a large number of other thriving cycling clubs with whom CTC members play an active part.  CTC members are prominent in both the Tandem Club and the Rough Stuff Fellowship.

Both CTC sections have full programmes of club runs throughout the year and both have organised short holiday breaks. Southern Scotland and the Lleyn Peninsula in North Wales will be the venues during the Easter and May Bank Holidays.York is within easy reach and members of the DA are in evidence at the York Rally each year. Similarly they are usually well represented at the CTC Birthday Rides and in 1996 these were hosted by Lancaster. Quite a number of members also participate in Audax/DATC style tourist trials.  The Northern Dales Audax trials, starting from and finishing at Arnside Youth Hostel, were first held in 1990. These two rides, of 202km and 110km respectively, are now well established and normally attract over 100 participants between them. The 17th edition is being held on September 3rd 2007.  In addition the North Lancs Way and Bowland Forest Populaire from Caton, near Lancaster, will be held this year for the fifth consecutive year at the beginning of July. All three events count towards the CTC’s DATC competition.

Lancaster has been chosen as one of the six English Cycling Demonstration Towns. Members’ involvement with the project has helped to promote a better understanding of cycling within Lancaster itself and has helped bridge some of the barriers between the various interest groups locally. Also Lancashire County Council’s Environmental Directorate coordinate a “led rides” scheme in which experienced club riders lead rides throughout the summer months in a programme underwritten by the County Council. This scheme has been valuable as a means of helping provide an introduction to group riding.

Cumbria and North Lancashire are superb areas for cycle touring with a vast network of quiet lanes crisscrossing beautiful countryside which includes the Lake District National Park, the Forest of Bowland, the Pennine hills and the valleys of the rivers Eden and Lune. SUSTRANS Route 6 runs along much of the length of the district and both Lancashire and Cumbria have their own way marked cycleways. CTC members make full use of the merits of the area and also tour way beyond its bounds. Overseas tours recently undertaken include much of Europe, North America, parts of Asia and the Antipodes. Last year DA members both participated in and led CTC tours one of which went as far a field as the Yunnan Province in South China.

Further details of the DA activities are available from the DA Secretary, Mike Hutchinson: e-mail: mikehutchinson@fatsmail.fm
