Cumbria Cycle Routes Update

NCH 72 Hadrians Cycleway

Maryport to Siloth: Solway AONB to submit bid for European funding, for off-road route to Old Kiln.

River Eden in Carlisle: Planning permission granted by City Council for new route subject to section 106 Agreement over maintenance. Sustrans considering voluntary maintenance arrangements to meet requirements.

Flimby: Underpass below railway awaiting Network Rail approval.

Seascale to Sellafield: Section upgraded by Sustrans through funding by British Nuclear Fuels

Lambley to Brampton (alternative route) : Section being taken forward by Sustrans through funding needed to complete.

Other sections: Appointment of Sustainable Transport Officer by Hadrian Heritage in December should help with funding.

NCN 72 Lancaster to Keswick

Dunmail Raise: Alignment of road route agreed in principle. Land negotiations and discussions regarding surfacing continuing.

South of Ambleside (Low Wood): Lake District National Park Authority looking again at previous proposals for alternative off-road route.

Kendal town centre: Development of spine cycle route as part of Kendal Transport Plan.

NCN 7 C2C

Workington: New segregated off-road cycle route from waterfront is open and will be extended as further redevelopment takes place.

Maryport Link: Consideration being given to a new starting/finishing  point via Derwent Forest.

Penrith: Improved signing undertaken. Off-rad section between Newton Rigg and town partly improved.

NCN 74 Lochs and Glens

Carlisle to Gretna: Upgrading of A74 to motorway will result in a new parallel ‘All Purpose Road’ which will be signed as a new section of NCN 74

NCN 68 Pennine Cycleway

Appleby to Kirkby Stephen: Possible realignment or braiding of route via Appleby to Warcop disused railway line (and Mallerstang) subject to creation of new shared-used route. Also NCN 71 will follow this route as well.

RCN 37 Ambleside to Ulverston 

Ambleside to Ulverston: Capita appointed to look at route and required signing.

Skelwith Bridge to Elterwater: Lake District National Park Authority constructing route, which should be completed by November.

RCN 20 Walney to Wear

Ulverston: Consideration being given to realignment of route west of Ulverston. Sustrans planning to take on stretch of disused railway between Ulverston and Bardsea so to develop coastal section to Barrow.

Greenodd: Highways Agency to develop new estuary section but awaiting resolution of subsidence issues. Signing/surfacing improvements required.

Kendal: Route into and out of town needs to be agreed and signed.

Extension of route to Whitby: New section open.

Other Routes

Country Council to look at possible new route and possible off-road route for the Cumbria Cycleway.

Development of cycle route around Thirlmere by United Utilities is on the agenda.

A long term project is development of Lune Cycleway from Kirkby Lonsdale to Sedbergh/Tebay.

 

New Members

We have had three members joining the Rough-Stuff Fellowship this week using application forms in The Rough-Stuff Journal, if you know anyone who would be interest in joining and would like copy of the Journal to look at please e-mail me  their name and address. I will send them a copy.

Ideas for future South Lakes Group rides

Here few ideals from Barrie and James on future rides for the South Lakes Group.

  1. Highway path- Birkdale Common Area from Kirkby Stephen.
  2. Whit Fell and Devoke Water Area.
  3. Garburn and Kirkstone passes
  4. Docray - Old Coach Road - St. Johns (north) -Guardhouse Bridge - Wallthwaite - Gillsrow - track over Flaska? (white road?) - Blinks Moss - New Road -Docray.
  5. Hilton - Scordale (military zone so date important !) - Mazebeck - High Cup Nick - Dufton.
  6. Orton - Gaythorne Plain - Drybeck - Hoff - Lookingflatt -Heights - Breaks Hall- Great Asby - Sayle Lane - Scarside.

I would like some  more ideals for future rides from members like ones above, we also looking to have group camping and youth hostel weekends next years so let me have ideals where you want to go please!
