Rough-Stuff Fellowship members will be glad to hear that Skiddaw House Youth Hostel has reopened for business, the former shepherd and gamekeepers cottage built in 1840, England most remote hostel (bunkhouse) and one of favorite Hostels of Late Alan Pocklington who was Area Secretary of the RSF’s Yorkshire Group for many years, the Yorkshire Group last stop at hostel in 2002.
The hostel incorporates 15 beds in four dormitories and has flush toilets, gas ring cookers & wood burning stoves but no mains electricity so you need to remember to take a torch.
The hostel is now being run by former manager Martin Webster and Marie-Pierre Gaudez and supported by newly formed Skiddaw House Foundation.
A night at Skiddaw House costs £10 per person for over 21s, £8 for guests aged between 16 and 21 and £6 for under 16s, also note they can only accept cash or cheques (cheque card required) as there are no credit or debit card facilities.
